Kahurangi Pounamu Porohita

I have just completed a special commission for a 45mm disc (porohita) with a koru carved into the front. This piece was crafted from bright green, highly translucent Kahurangi Pounamu, a stone that embodies clarity and vitality. The vivid green hues and translucency of the stone give it a sense of depth and life, making it a stunning recreation of the original taonga.

This commission was deeply meaningful, as it was created to replace a lost family taonga that once belonged to the customer’s Nana. Using an old photo for reference, I worked closely with the customer to capture the essence of the original piece, ensuring it could be a new source of connection to their family heritage. The koru design represents growth, renewal, and the continuity of life, making it a fitting symbol for this heartfelt recreation.

Crafting this taonga was an honour, knowing it will help the wearer reconnect with their family’s past while creating new memories for the future.
