Te Aroha Tūturu

Te Aroha Tūturu, meaning “True Love”, is a commissioned roimata created as an anniversary gift from a husband to his wife. The name reflects the enduring love and commitment they have built together, and the thought and care that went into creating something made especially for this occasion.

This taonga is carved from beautiful inanga Pounamu with a soft, pale green colour that comes alive when held up to the light. Measuring 65mm long, the stone has a gentle glow that suits the quiet elegance of the design. It is finished with a black roimata lashing that complements the subtle tones of the Pounamu without drawing attention away from the carving itself.

The design was something we developed together. My client came to me with sketches and clear ideas about what he wanted to achieve, which made the design process a genuine collaboration. Together we refined those ideas into a roimata that features a negative-space heart. Two flowing forms wrap around each other to create the heart, giving the pendant a sense of connection and unity while keeping the overall shape clean and balanced.

The roimata is a form that symbolises healing, strength, remembrance and deep emotional connection. It is often worn to honour relationships, carry memories, or represent the bonds that matter most. Combined with the heart at its centre, this taonga becomes a lasting reminder of the love these two people share and the life they continue to build together.

Creating commissioned taonga like this is always rewarding because they carry stories that are unique to the people who will wear them. Seeing an idea move from a simple sketch into a finished piece of Pounamu is a privilege, and I hope this taonga will be treasured for many years to come.
