Pounamu Crosses
I recently had the privilege to carve two Pounamu crosses on commission, one measuring 4cm and the other 6cm, both crafted from vibrant green Nephrite Jade. These crosses hold deep personal significance for the recipient, symbolising strength, faith, and resilience.
Creating crosses from Pounamu is a powerful experience. Pounamu, or New Zealand greenstone, is treasured not just for its natural beauty but for the mana it carries. This stone is revered by Māori as a taonga, a precious object with cultural and spiritual importance, symbolising protection, connection, and the unbroken lineage of whānau across generations. Each piece of Pounamu has its own unique character, both in its natural colors and patterns and in the energy it holds.
The deep green hues of these crosses reflect vitality and a strong connection to Aotearoa’s natural landscape. The smaller 4cm cross has a solid presence, ideal for wearing close to the heart as a personal talisman. The larger 6cm cross holds a commanding grace, perfect as both a symbol of devotion and a piece that connects the wearer to the heritage and spirit of Pounamu.
Each line, edge, and surface was carefully crafted to honor both the stone and the meaning behind these symbols. These Pounamu crosses are more than jewelry—they carry a legacy and will be a part of the wearer’s journey, creating a lasting connection to Aotearoa and to the values embodied by Pounamu.
