Te Puna Aroha

Some taonga hold a story so deeply woven with love and resilience that they become more than a pendant—they become a source of strength, a reflection of a journey, and a connection to those who walk alongside us.

This piece, Te Puna Aroha (The Well of Love), was carved from a beautiful piece of Aroha Stone, gifted to me to transform into a taonga with meaning. The Roimata shape was chosen for its symbolism of healing, resilience, and connection to the land—a fitting tribute to the incredible journey of the young woman it was made for.

Her mother spoke of her daughter’s path—a long and difficult journey of healing, faced with challenges no one should have to endure, especially so young. And yet, within that journey, there is strength. A strength that comes from her own unwavering courage, her love of nature, her honesty, and her deep connection to the whenua. This taonga was to be more than a gift; it was a reflection of her Kaupapa, a reminder of who she is and the strength she carries within.

Te Puna Aroha stands 4cm high, shaped with smooth, flowing edges so it can be held comfortably in the hand—a physical anchor in moments of reflection. The deep red tones of the stone hold warmth and life, with subtle variations that symbolise the many strengths within her. At its heart, a featured hole with dual attached four-braid cords allows the pendant to sit flat against the chest, keeping it close to the wearer’s heart.

Aroha Stone carries its own unique presence. It is a stone of warmth, of love, of quiet but unshakable resilience. This Roimata carries all of that and more—the love of a mother for her daughter, the healing energy of the stone, and the connection to Aotearoa’s wild and beautiful landscapes that have always been a source of peace and grounding for her.

Through the waves and rivers, the mountains and forests, through hardship and healing, this taonga is a reminder of the journey already traveled and the strength to continue forward. It holds the aroha of a mother, the support of ancestors, and the beauty of a life deeply connected to the whenua.

This piece was a privilege to carve. Te Puna Aroha will now walk with her, a silent but steadfast companion on her journey.
