Pikorua – Double Twist

I had the privilege of carving a commissioned Pounamu taonga to help honour the memory of a brother. The piece is a 6cm double twist Pikorua, crafted from a stunning pale green Inanga Pounamu, which holds deep significance both in its design and the story it represents.

The double twist, or Pikorua, symbolises the intertwining paths of two lives, their connection unbroken even when separated by distance or time. It’s a powerful symbol of the enduring bond between people. In this piece, the Pikorua represents the special connection between the customer and their brother—one that will continue, despite their physical separation. The twist embodies not only memories shared but also the lasting impact of a loved one on our lives.

This Pikorua is more than just a carving—it’s a heartfelt expression of remembrance, love, and connection. As I carved the twists, I thought about how we stay linked to those we’ve lost, keeping their memory alive through the taonga we carry. It was an honour to be entrusted with this work, knowing it will serve as a meaningful anchor for the family.

This is why I carve—to give form to the stories and emotions that we hold so dear and treasure deeply.
