Whakairo Tūmanako
I’m pleased to share one of my creations, a large Pounamu Toki carved from Kawakawa Pounamu sourced from the sacred Arahura River. This piece stands out not only for its size—an impressive 85mm in length—but also for its unique features and deep symbolism. I’ve named this piece Whakairo Tūmanako, which means “Carving Hope.” I chose this name because it encapsulates the Toki’s significance as a symbol of strength, courage, and the ability to shape one’s path and destiny, as well as the metaphor of embracing natural beauty and authenticity.
The heart of Whakairo Tūmanako showcases the deep, rich green characteristic of Kawakawa Pounamu. What makes this piece truly special is the natural outer edge of the rough boulder preserved on the back of the Toki. The lighter, pale green coloring comes from the rind, the outer edge of the boulder. This contrast between the deep green heart and the lighter rind speaks volumes about the stone’s journey and transformation.
The Toki, a traditional Māori adze, has a rich history and profound meaning. Traditionally used as a tool, it symbolizes strength, courage, and the ability to shape and influence the world. The Toki shape represents the idea of carving one’s path and forging one’s destiny. In the context of Whakairo Tūmanako, this symbolism is amplified, reminding us of the hope and determination needed to carve our own futures.
A Metaphor for Natural Beauty and Authenticity
In preserving the natural outer edge of the boulder, this Toki becomes a powerful metaphor for embracing our natural beauty and rough edges. Whakairo Tūmanako reminds us to be unapologetically ourselves, honoring our unique journeys and imperfections. The combination of the deep green heart and the lighter rind illustrates the beauty that comes from authenticity and self-acceptance.
Creating Whakairo Tūmanako allowed me to connect deeply with the essence of Aotearoa, drawing from the sacred waters of the Arahura River and transforming a piece of its history into a wearable work of art. Each time I work with Kawakawa Pounamu, I am reminded of the strength and beauty that lie within us all, waiting to be revealed.
