Te Mana Rākau
This bright green Raukaraka Pounamu Toki is 80mm long and 45mm wide, carved with softly curved sides and a broad, bold shape that gives it real presence. Hints of orange run through the stone, adding warmth and variation to the vibrant green. The lashing is a rich harakeke-coloured cord, contrasting beautifully with the stone and anchoring it with an earthy, grounded feel. I’ve named this piece Te Mana Rākau, meaning “The Power of the Tool,” to acknowledge the traditional use of the toki as a working tool—something purposeful, dependable, and tied to the mana of mahi, or meaningful work.
The wide proportions of this taonga aren’t just visual—they symbolise strength, stability, and purpose. Traditionally, the toki was a tool used in carving and building. When worn as a Hei Toki, it carries the meaning of strength, determination, and the authority to act with integrity. This piece reflects that legacy, offering not just visual impact but a connection to the values of craftsmanship and leadership.
