Toki Totoweka

This piece is named Toki Totoweka, referring to the reddish-brown colouring within the stone that becomes visible when held to the light. Totoweka is a rare colouring sometimes found in South Westland Pounamu and is known for its rich, earthy tones that seem to glow from within. The name acknowledges this taonga’s connection to the whenua and to the unique variations found in Aotearoa’s stone.

This 75mm Toki is made from Nephrite Pounamu, carefully shaped and finished to bring out the depth of the Totoweka colouring. The surface holds subtle patterns, but it’s when light shines through that the true beauty is revealed. I’ve used a black lashing in the classic style, giving contrast and presence to the stone without taking away from the colouring.

The Toki form has long been a symbol of strength, determination, and leadership. Traditionally representing an adze or chisel used in shaping and building, the Hei Toki is not a weapon—it is a tool. Wearing a Toki is a way to carry those qualities into the everyday: the strength to shape your own path, the focus to craft something of meaning, and the resilience to endure.

This Toki carries both strength and beauty—grounded in tradition, shaped with intention, and brought to life by the unique colouring of Totoweka Pounamu.
