Tākiri Pounamu Toki

This 50mm Toki is carved from Tākiri Pounamu, a remarkable type of stone sourced from Douglas Creek. The name “Tākiri” reflects the energy of awakening, new beginnings, and the spark of transformation, all of which are deeply tied to the origins and meaning of this Pounamu. The swirling patterns of green within the stone are a testament to its natural beauty and the journey it has undergone over millennia.

The Toki shape carries its own powerful symbolism in te ao Māori. Traditionally used as a tool for carving, cutting, and building, the Toki represents strength, resilience, and determination. It embodies the energy of forging a path forward, both in a practical and spiritual sense. A Toki like this serves as a reminder of the strength we hold within and our ability to overcome challenges to achieve great things.

This piece features a tan lashing that beautifully complements the earthy tones of the Tākiri Pounamu. The lashing, simple yet elegant, enhances the natural patterns of the stone while grounding the piece in a traditional aesthetic. Together, the Toki and its binding create a taonga that is as functional as it is meaningful.

Carving this Toki was a process of honouring the stone’s journey and its potential to carry a new story for its wearer. It symbolises the connection between the natural world and human resilience—a piece to inspire strength and renewal.
