Wide Roimata – A Father & Son Collaboration

This taonga is more than just a carving—it marks a moment in time, a step in my son’s journey as a carver. He chose the Pounamu, shaped the form, and put in the hard work sanding and polishing. My role was simply to guide when needed, offering advice and support as he brought his vision to life.

The Roimata form symbolises healing and connection, and this piece holds both. It carries the learning, patience, and dedication he put into it, and for me, it represents the pride of seeing him grow into his craft. The wide, flowing shape has presence, and the golden-green stone he selected has a depth that speaks of both history and potential.

Before long, he won’t need my help—he’ll be carving these entirely on his own. And that’s exactly as it should be.
