Te Ara

When it comes to embodying symbolism and cultural significance, few artifacts are as telling as the toki carved from pakohe. Recently, I had the honor of creating a special pakohe toki for a dear friend, one that holds deep resonance. Named “Te Ara,” which translates to “the path,” this toki is more than just a piece of art – it’s a reminder of life’s journey and the importance of staying true to one’s chosen course.

In the Māori language, “Te Ara” means “the path.” The design of this toki is marked by a prominent line down its middle, representing this path. Like life, the line isn’t always straight or predictable, but it’s consistent. This toki serves as a reminder that while there will be times of success and moments of challenge, it’s crucial to remain steadfast and stay the course. The path we choose defines us, shapes our experiences, and, ultimately, leads us to our destiny.

Pakohe, a type of metamorphic rock, has deep roots in Māori culture. Used for various tools and weapons in pre-European times, pakohe was revered for its strength and durability. The toki, in particular, was a tool used for carving wood, but over time, it evolved to become a symbol of authority and prestige.

The formation of pakohe is itself a testament to perseverance and transformation. Originating as sedimentary rocks like mudstone or sandstone, pakohe undergoes intense heat and pressure over millennia. This process transforms it, imbuing it with resilience and a unique texture and appearance.

To the Māori, pakohe is more than just a stone. It tells stories of change, resilience, and evolution, mirroring the Māori’s own history and connection with the land. Carving this stone into artifacts, especially the toki, allows these narratives to be passed down through generations.

Te Ara, the pakohe toki, is not just an artifact; it’s a tangible representation of life’s journey. Its name, design, and the very material from which it’s carved remind us of the importance of embracing our chosen path with determination and grace. As we face the ebb and flow of life, let this toki serve as a touchstone, reminding us to persevere, to transform challenges into growth, and to always cherish the journey of Te Ara.
