Te Ara Mua

This small hoe pendant, named Te Ara Mua, was carved as a 40th birthday gift, symbolising guidance, direction, and the ability to move forward with purpose. The hoe, or paddle, is a powerful symbol in te ao Māori. It speaks to the journey we each take through life, and our role in steering ourselves and our whānau through both calm and turbulent waters. Whether gifted to a leader, a parent, or a friend, it acknowledges the steady hand they offer and the direction they help provide.

This piece is made from a gorgeous deep green Kawakawa Pounamu, just 40mm long but rich in character. When held to the light, it becomes almost glowing with its level of translucency, offering a glimpse into its heart. There’s something special about seeing into a stone like this—as if it mirrors the person it’s been made for: someone with depth, integrity, and strength that shines through when the light is right.

Carving this taonga was a reminder of how powerful the smallest gestures can be. I hope it carries mana and meaning for the recipient as they mark this milestone in their journey.

Te Ara Mua is more than a name—it’s a message. It acknowledges the journey already travelled and offers strength for the road ahead. I’m honoured to have played a small part in that journey through this piece.
