Kawakawa Cross

Pounamu, the treasured greenstone of New Zealand, holds deep spiritual and cultural significance. When carved into a cross, a timeless symbol of faith and spirituality, its power and beauty take on an even greater depth. I’d like to share my latest creation, a beautiful cross pendant carved from a rich, deep block of kawakawa pounamu.

Kawakawa pounamu is a special variety of greenstone, known for its rich, dark green hues that often evoke images of lush forests. This particular piece of kawakawa embodied a strength and depth that immediately inspired a cross design.

Rather than intricate detailing, I chose a blocky, minimalist form for this cross. Standing about 3cm tall, its clean lines and simple shape allow the beauty of the pounamu to speak for itself. The deep green color, touched by subtle natural variations, becomes the focus, mesmerizing and drawing the eye into tranquility.

This kawakawa pounamu cross is a unique and meaningful wearable piece. It is a reminder of the enduring power of simple forms, the deep beauty of natural materials, and the profound connections we can find through symbolism and craftsmanship.

    Tātau Whānau

Tātau Whānau means “our family” or “all of us as a family.” I chose this name because these taonga come from a single slice of Pounamu that has travelled through generations of their Ngāi Tahu whānau. The name makes the meaning explicit: this stone has always belonged to the collective. By becoming a roimata and…
