Samoan Toki – A Taonga of Unity and Strength

I had the honour of carving this 7cm Samoan-inspired Toki from beautiful Kawakawa Pounamu, sourced from the Arahura River. This piece is a heartfelt and meaningful gift, rich with symbolism, for a man who carries the strength and pride of both Samoan and Māori cultures.

This Toki features five spearheads carved down the middle, representing prosperity, the ability to provide for whānau, and personal strength. These spearheads also hold special significance, symbolising key whānau members, making this piece a deeply personal taonga.

The edges are carved with shark teeth carvings, which embody power, guidance, and protection. These symbols are a testament to the attributes of the man receiving this gift and his role as a protector and guide within his family.

At the base of the Toki is a double koru design, representing the coming together of Samoan and Māori cultures. This detail celebrates his heritage and his journey of building a life in Aotearoa, honouring both his origins and the land he now calls home.

The Toki is a symbol of leadership, resilience, and connection. For the recipient, it is a tangible representation of his strength and the love and respect of those who gifted it to him. The taonga not only connects him to his heritage but also serves as a daily reminder of his cultural and family bonds.

To fully appreciate this taonga, I’ve created a video showcasing the Toki from every angle. Watching the piece turn reveals the intricate carvings and the natural beauty of the Kawakawa Pounamu, which catches the light to highlight its unique patterns and deep green hues.

Creating this Toki was a privilege. It embodies the strength of two cultures, the unity of whānau, and the stories that bind us together. I’m grateful to play a small part in crafting a taonga that carries such profound meaning.
