Rangatiratanga – Toki Poutangata Collaboration

This is a project long time in the making.  I carved and finished the Pounamu the start of 2015 and it was presented for the first time at the end of 2016.

It is a collaboration between myself, a student at my school, and the Maori/Technology teacher.  I did the Pounamu and they together did the handle and base as part of a student project

I decided this would be a good gift for a staff award at my school.  A way to celebrate and encourage something that is important to me, and a way for me to leave a legacy.

It is called Rangatiratanga – Leadership.  It is presented/passed on annually between staff members at my campus to honour significant peer leadership.

Toki Poutangata – Awarded for Peer Leadership

This Toki Poutangata is awarded at the end of each year before the final whole school lunch sometime. It is awarded for significant or outstanding peer leadership within the staff team at Dilworth Rural Campus.

The previous years recipient will choose and award the current years’ recipient. If they are not able to do so for whatever reason then the responsibility will be for the Head of Rural Campus. They will also be responsible for putting up a portrait of the new recipient.

Pounamu was carved by Campbell Potter. The handle was crafted by Ben Sio-Jennings and Matua Adams as a Legacy project in 2016.
