Description
Carved by David Curtis from a beautiful piece of raukaraka pounamu, Te Ara Māia draws its character from both its symbolism and the unique colours within the stone. Rich green pounamu is complemented by warm orange-brown tones running along one side, giving the taonga a distinctive natural character that reflects the landscapes from which pounamu is formed.
Inspired by the niho of the taniwha, this carving represents strength, courage, resilience, and protection. The bold points that project from the edges symbolise making deliberate choices and moving confidently in the direction that is right for you, even when the path ahead is uncertain.
Three decorative holes, each connected to the edge by a small notch, represent the past, present, and future. Together they acknowledge that every stage of life shapes who we become. Our past provides experience, the present is where our choices are made, and the future is built through the strength and determination we carry forward. These elements work together to support the wearer’s journey, reminding us that we are never defined by a single moment but by the path we continue to walk.
Suspended from a simple hole on a black cord, this taonga is designed for everyday wear. It is a meaningful reminder to embrace life’s challenges with courage, draw strength from where you have come, and step confidently toward what lies ahead.
