Description
Te Ara Kaha means Path of Strength. I chose this title because the natural dark green band running through the lighter stone feels like a pathway cutting through the heart of the Pounamu. It represents direction, purpose, and the inner strength that guides us forward.
This 65mm Hei Matau is carved from luminous, translucent light green Pounamu. When held to the light, the stone reveals depth and clarity, with the darker green band creating contrast and character. The curves are smooth and confident, giving the piece a sense of flow and movement while keeping the overall design simple and clean.
The Hei Matau traditionally symbolises strength, prosperity, and safe travel, especially across water. It is connected to Tangaroa and the ocean, representing protection for those who journey and the ability to provide for whānau. It also speaks to resilience — holding steady in shifting tides and uncertain conditions.
Worn close to the heart, this taonga is a reminder to stay true to your path, to move forward with determination, and to draw on your inner strength when needed. The natural beauty of the translucent stone combined with its strong symbolism makes this a powerful and timeless piece.
