Description
The toki is a symbol of strength, determination, and authority. Traditionally used as a tool for building and shaping, in taonga form it represents the power to persevere and to carve oneâs own path.
Toki Koi, carved by David Curtis, embodies this kaupapa. Its name, Koi, speaks of sharpness, cleverness, and clarity â qualities reflected in its form. At 75mm long, the piece is shaped from Kawakawa Pounamu with a strong flat back, sharply angled beveled edges, and a single curved cutting edge. The mix of sharp geometry with one flowing curve mirrors the balance between resilience and gentleness.
A simple hole with a groove lashing on a brown three-plait cord completes the taonga, grounding it in humility and strength. Toki Koi is both a reminder and a companion â a symbol of insight, resolve, and the determination to shape oneâs world.
