Description

This niho is carved from a distinctive piece of inanga pounamu. The main body has the soft, creamy colouring characteristic of inanga, while natural veins of richer medium green run through the stone. These veins have a glossy, almost glass-like quality and stand out strongly against the paler pounamu.

At 70mm long, the niho has smooth, sweeping curves that give the taonga a strong but balanced form. The variation between the creamy host stone and the darker green veins gives the piece plenty of natural character.

Niho means tooth and is a traditional form associated with strength, resilience and courage. The tooth is a symbol of strength and capability, making the niho a fitting taonga for someone facing challenges, moving into a new stage of life, or as a reminder of their own inner strength.

The taonga is finished with a three-hole ring-bolt lashing using honey-white waxed cord. The light colour of the lashing works particularly well with the creamy tones of the inanga pounamu.
