Toki Toa

These two Toki were carved specifically to be presented to prize winners at a Early Childhood Council conference. Each Toki embodies the spirit of strength, wisdom, and leadership. The categories or the winners are Outstanding Achievement and Contribution to the ECC sector.

In Māori culture, the Toki symbolises power, authority, and honour. Traditionally, it was used as a tool and weapon, representing strength and resilience. Today, the Toki is worn as a pendant, carrying the mana (prestige) of the wearer and symbolising their role as a leader and protector.

This set features two distinct types of Pounamu:

Deep Green Kawakawa from Southwestland: Known for its rich, dark green hue, this Toki has a depth and robustness that allowed me to carve intricate lines and curves, enhancing its natural beauty and texture.

Marsden Flower Jade, or Putiputi Pounamu: This piece, with its unique yellow/orange patterns and vibrant green tones, offers a striking contrast. The natural variations in the stone provided an excellent canvas for creating standout features, making each Toki truly one-of-a-kind.

It was an honour to create these Toki, knowing they will be awarded to individuals who exemplify the qualities of leadership and wisdom. Each piece is a tribute to the rich cultural heritage of Aotearoa and a symbol of the enduring strength and mana of its people.
