Matau Tiaki

Matau Tiaki translates to the protective hook. The Hei Matau carries the mana of Tangaroa, symbolising strength, safe passage across water, and prosperity. For this young man, it represents guardianship, resilience, and the courage to face life’s challenges. The name highlights the hook as a kaitiaki — a protector who journeys alongside him.

Carved from Kahurangi Pounamu, this piece stands 45mm high. Kahurangi is among the most prized types of pounamu, known for its consistent, translucent green and clarity that glows when held to the light. It symbolises peace, prosperity, and new beginnings. The natural beauty of this stone gives the taonga a sense of life and energy, making it both visually striking and deeply meaningful.

The taonga is finished with a black hook lashing at the top. This lashing style represents strength and security, ensuring the Hei Matau is held close to the heart and worn with confidence.

Matau Tiaki is more than a pendant. It is a guardian, a reminder of protection and resilience, and a symbol of safe journeys ahead. With its connection to Tangaroa and the enduring strength of pounamu, this taonga carries both the spirit of the sea and the steadfast protection of a hook.
