Mana Tāwhito – Ancient Power
I recently completed a special commission for a 12cm Manaia carved from a stunning piece of very pale, almost white Inanga Pounamu. This taonga has been named Mana Tāwhito, meaning “Ancient Power.” The name reflects the deep spiritual significance of the Manaia as a guardian and its connection to ancestral wisdom and strength.

The Manaia is a powerful symbol in Māori culture, embodying the role of a protector and a guide between the physical and spiritual worlds. Its three fingers represent the past, present, and future, encouraging balance and mindfulness in all aspects of life. For this piece, the name Mana Tāwhito was chosen to honour the timeless essence of the Manaia, connecting it to the enduring power of the past and the wisdom it brings to the present and future.
The pale Inanga Pounamu enhances the spiritual nature of the design. Its almost white hue exudes a sense of purity and serenity, perfectly complementing the meaning of the Manaia. This stone is rare and carries its own quiet strength, making it the perfect material for this deeply meaningful taonga.

The creation of Mana Tāwhito was a journey that began with an initial sketch. Slowly, through each stage of carving, the guardian emerged from the raw stone. The process included careful blocking out of the form, refining the intricate details, and polishing the surface to bring out the natural patterns within the stone. Each step revealed more of the Manaia’s character, connecting the design to the spiritual and natural worlds.

The final taonga is a striking representation of balance and connection, blending the flowing form of the Manaia with the calming energy of the Inanga Pounamu. It is a piece that carries the essence of guardianship and the enduring power of ancient wisdom.

Mana Tāwhito is now ready to carry its protective spirit to its new owner, offering strength, guidance, and a connection to the spiritual realm.
