Kahurangi Pounamu Hei Matau

This 35mm Hei Matau is crafted from stunning gem-grade Kahurangi Pounamu, one of the most sought-after varieties of New Zealand greenstone. Its bright green hues and extraordinary translucency make this piece truly breathtaking. The way light passes through the stone gives it a radiant glow, bringing the taonga to life.

At the heart of the design, a koru symbol is carved into the centre of the Hei Matau. The koru, representing new beginnings, growth, and connection, adds a layer of symbolism to the traditional fishhook shape. The Hei Matau itself is a powerful symbol of strength, prosperity, and safe travels, deeply rooted in Māori culture. Together, the koru and Hei Matau convey a message of embracing life’s journeys and evolving through them.

This piece showcases the unique beauty of Kahurangi Pounamu, often prized for its clarity and vibrant colour. Such high-quality stone is rare and carries a special mana, making it a perfect material for a taonga meant to hold significance and connection for its wearer.

I carefully carved the shape to balance its strength and elegance, highlighting the natural beauty of the Pounamu. The finish is silky smooth, inviting touch, and the design flows organically with the stone’s natural features.

This piece is a true reflection of my passion for creating taonga that honours both the stone’s story and the significance it carries for its owner.
