Fire and Emergency Long Service Hei Toki

This Hei Toki was carved as a replacement for a Fire and Emergency long service award after the original taonga, which had already been prepared for presentation, was unfortunately lost. My role was to create a new taonga that would carry the same purpose and recognition, ensuring the recipient still received a meaningful piece to mark their years of service.

Carved from beautiful kawakawa Pounamu, this Hei Toki measures 80mm long by 40mm wide and has a rich green colour that comes alive with a beautiful glow when held up to the light. It is finished with a traditional black lashing that complements the stone and highlights the natural beauty of the Pounamu.

The front of the taonga features six koru carved into a circular arrangement. The koru symbolises growth, renewal, and the journey through life. Together in a circle, the six koru represent continuity, unity, and the years of experience gained through dedicated service. For a long service award, the design reflects not only the time given, but also the commitment, resilience, and relationships built throughout a career of serving others.

The Hei Toki itself symbolises strength, determination, courage, and leadership. It has long represented people who use their skills and knowledge in service of others, making it a fitting form for recognising the dedication shown by members of Fire and Emergency. Combined with the six koru, the design acknowledges both personal growth and the lasting contribution made over many years.

It was an honour to carve this replacement taonga. Although it was created to replace a piece that had gone missing, its purpose remains the same: to recognise and celebrate a career of commitment, service, and dedication.
