Ako Pounamu – Learning

I recently had the privilege of carving two Taonga Pounamu with the same design called “Ako,” each as a separate commission. The name “Ako” carries deep significance, representing the essence of teaching and learning. It was a special project for me, as education is not only a focus in my own life but something I feel strongly about sharing with others. To create these pieces for another teacher who is equally passionate about education was an honour.

The design itself symbolises the lifelong pursuit of knowledge. The incomplete circle represents what we contribute to the world and to others, while the missing semi-circle reminds us of the knowledge still waiting to be discovered. Learning never ends, and this design speaks to the connections we make, the lessons we learn from each other, and the ongoing journey of discovery.

These two commissions were not just carvings but expressions of the ongoing exchange of wisdom, growth, and learning that we all engage in throughout our lives.
