Waka Hoi Pounamu

I’m excited to share the story behind a special commission piece, the Waka Hoi Pounamu. This pendant was crafted for a distinguished leader transitioning from their role in an organisation, symbolising their journey and the legacy they leave behind. The Waka Hoi Pounamu, resembling a waka (canoe) paddle, embodies the essence of leadership and direction. In Māori culture, the waka is more than a mode of transport; it represents teamwork, unity, and the collective effort required to move forward effectively. The better the coordination among the paddlers, the smoother and more efficient the journey.

This metaphor extends to organisational leadership. A leader provides direction, ensures everyone is aligned, and fosters a collaborative environment where each team member’s contribution propels the group toward their shared goals.

This unique pendant is carved from Kawakawa Pounamu sourced from the Arahura River. The stone’s position at the edge of the Pounamu piece gives it a pale green hue, beautifully mottled with darker green patches. This natural variation adds to the pendant’s character and symbolises the diverse experiences and influences that shape a leader.

The Journey Ahead

The Waka Hoi Pounamu is a tribute to those who guide their teams with wisdom and foresight. It serves as a reminder that true leadership is about harnessing the collective strength of the team and steering it towards a brighter future.
