Dawnlight Toki
Toki, traditional Maori adzes, are renowned for their strength and the skilled hands required to craft them. But sometimes, the greatest transformations occur when we surrender to nature’s artistry, as is the case with my newest piece, “Dawnlight”.
This toki began its life as a humble agate, a gemstone formed within the fiery heart of ancient volcanoes. Yet, this particular agate, discovered amidst the riverbeds of the South Island, held a luminous secret. Its dominant cool blues were interwoven with wisps of white like morning clouds. And when held to the light, a warm orange glow reminiscent of a sunrise would spread through the stone.
The traditional toki shape seemed a natural fit for this striking stone. With every cut and polish, the agate’s inherent beauty was brought forth. The blues deepened, the clouds took on ethereal definition, and the hidden orange hues were ready to shimmer with the changing light.
The name “Dawnlight” was inspired by the agate’s ability to transform as light passed through it. Dawn is a time of new beginnings, of possibilities unfolding. It’s a gentle, hopeful light that washes away the darkness. This toki embodies that transformative power, a reminder that even the most unassuming beginnings can hold unexpected beauty.
Measuring approximately 8cm, the Dawnlight toki is a substantial piece, yet its translucency gives it an unexpected lightness. It invites the wearer to pause, to find different angles and discover the play of light within. This toki is more than just a piece of jewelry – it’s a wearable testament to the transformative powers of nature and a reminder of the quiet beauty hidden within ourselves.
