Kawakawa Earrings 3cm
I’ve always been captivated by the beauty and significance of pounamu, New Zealand’s precious greenstone. That’s why I was thrilled to craft a pair of earrings from a piece of kawakawa pounamu sourced from the Arahura River on the West Coast.
My earrings are simple yet elegant, about 3 centimeters in length, showcasing the vibrant green hues of the kawakawa variety. As I shaped and polished them, I couldn’t help but feel a deep connection to the stone’s history and spirit.
Pounamu holds a revered place in Māori culture. It symbolizes strength, resilience, and connection to ancestors and the natural world. Traditionally considered a taonga (treasure), pounamu is often gifted to mark significant occasions. The stone is believed to possess its own mana (spiritual power), which grows stronger with each person who wears it.
Kawakawa pounamu, specifically, is known for its rich, deep green color, reminiscent of the native kawakawa plant. It’s a testament to the raw natural beauty of New Zealand’s West Coast.
