Marino – Calm Water

This recently completed piece is called Marino, meaning “Calm Waters.” It measures 35mm and is carved from highly translucent gem-grade kahurangi pounamu. The customer, for whom I had previously created a larger taonga, reached out again after experiencing discomfort due to ongoing medical challenges. He requested a smaller, more comfortable design that he could wear with ease. This hei matau honors that request while still carrying the mana of his original piece.

The name Marino was chosen to reflect the qualities of peace, ease, and adaptability. It symbolizes the calm and steady waters that guide us on our journey, even when faced with unexpected changes. For the wearer, this piece represents a transition to a design that aligns with his current needs while still holding the deep significance of a treasured taonga.

The hei matau (fishhook) holds rich symbolism in Māori culture, representing strength, prosperity, and safe passage over water. It connects the wearer to the oceans that sustain life and to the journey through one’s own life path. With Marino, I wanted to capture that sense of calm resilience — the ability to navigate life’s challenges with grace.

Working with kahurangi pounamu is always a privilege, especially with this highly translucent stone. As light passes through it, the vivid green hues glow, creating a piece that feels alive and connected to its natural origins. I took great care to ensure that every curve flowed smoothly, giving it a natural, organic presence. The result is a taonga that feels fluid and balanced, a reflection of the peaceful waters for which it is named.

I’m incredibly pleased with how this piece turned out and honored to craft something meaningful for a customer who has entrusted me with his journey not just once, but twice.
