Toki Mā

I recently completed a Toki that stands out for its unique material and appearance. This piece is carved from the rind of a Tangiwai boulder. Over time, the rind of this boulder has undergone oxidation, turning it into a striking white, a rare transformation in Pounamu. Scattered throughout the white surface are dark spots of another mineral, a feature often found in Pounamu that adds to the natural beauty and character of the stone.

The Toki is 6cm long, with a white cord lashing that complements the pale hue of the stone. The lashing includes a 4-braid plait, adding a touch of elegance and craftsmanship to the piece.

In traditional Māori culture, the Toki symbolises strength, courage, and the ability to overcome challenges. Historically, the Toki was used as a tool, but it also represented leadership and authority when worn as an adornment. This particular Toki, with its rare white Tangiwai, embodies the idea of transformation and resilience, reminding us that even through the passage of time and change, beauty and strength emerge.

This piece is not just a carving; it’s a testament to the enduring nature of Pounamu and the stories it holds within its layers. The white Tangiwai, with its distinctive mineral spots, tells a story of change and adaptation, making it a meaningful and powerful piece to wear.
