Te Moana, Roimata – Kawakawa Pounamu
This is a subtle and beautiful piece of Pounamu. This Roimata has a deep green colour to it that makes you feel like you are looking right into the heart of it.
When you hold it in the light you can see the subtle patterning of this Pounamu that reminds me of the shifting hues of the ocean and hence where its name comes from, Te Moana.
To me the meaning of the Roimata shape is comfort, emotional connection, reassurance, and empathy. It could be given to someone to mark a significant occasion or to show someone that is going through a tough time that they are cared for.
This piece has a sister pendant that was carved from the same piece of Pounamu, in fact they lay side by side until the were separated for carving. You can see the sister piece called Aotearoa here.
