Toki Taumutu

Taumutu, a small coastal settlement near Waihora, Lake Ellesmere, in New Zealand’s South Island, holds a rugged beauty shaped by the relentless sea. It was on this windswept beach that I discovered a beach pebble, a humble piece of ōnewa (greywacke) that whispered of hidden potential. With careful shaping and a respect for the stone’s natural character, I transformed this pebble into a 6cm high toki pendant, a tribute to the enduring spirit of Taumutu and the rich symbolism of the toki itself.

The toki (adze) was an essential tool in traditional Maori culture, used for carving, construction, and even combat. This adze-like shape signifies strength, resilience, and determination. Hand-carved from ōnewa, a stone revered for its strength and durability, my toki pendant embodies these qualities, making it a powerful talisman for its wearer.

Ōnewa (greywacke) is a stone deeply connected to the South Island of New Zealand. Its formation tells a story of ancient rivers and relentless pressure, mirroring the ruggedness of the Taumutu coast. The natural variations in the stone’s grey coloring add a touch of individuality to each hand-carved toki.

The process of transforming a beach pebble into a toki is a meditative one. It requires patience, respect for the stone, and a keen eye for the shape hidden within. The simple act of carving connects the maker to a long tradition of Maori craftsmanship and a deep respect for the natural world.
