Toa Moana – Ocean Warrior

Toa Moana – Ocean Warrior – is the name I’ve given this 8cm Pounamu Toki. It speaks to the strength and identity carried across the sea, connecting Aotearoa and Samoa. Carved from rich green Pounamu, this piece features two spearheads down the centre, symbolising courage and leadership, with rows of shark teeth along each edge representing protection, perseverance, and strength. This taonga brings together the traditions of both cultures in one unified form – a warrior’s tool and a symbol of deep cultural connection.

The design was created for someone whose story stretches across the Pacific, with deep connections to both Aotearoa and Samoa. We wanted the toki to honour their cultural heritage and personal journey – a piece that speaks to their identity, strength, and sense of belonging.

Pounamu is traditionally associated with strength, authority, and protection – a perfect foundation for the meanings carried in the Samoan motifs. Bringing these two traditions together in one taonga allowed me to honour both lineages while crafting a unique symbol of unity and resilience.

This toki will be worn close to the heart, grounding the wearer in their ancestry and reminding them daily of the strength they carry forward.
