Description

Waka Hēre is Paul Berry’s interpretation of a traditional Raranga Hapine, a tool once used when working with muka. This piece carries that heritage forward. It is designed as a large taonga that sits comfortably around the neck, shaped to reflect the original functional form.

Carved from bright pale green pounamu from the Tasman area, the stone shows swirling greens that shift and move under the light. The form is strong, practical, and purposeful, staying true to the nature of a hapine: durable, unbreakable, and made for work.

Paul has named this design Waka Hēre, meaning Little Boat. The name reflects the shape and purpose of the tool. Like a small vessel carrying its load, this taonga symbolises movement, productivity, and the steady continuation of mahi. It stands as a piece of wearable art that also holds the identity of a working tool—something that honours both form and function.

Finished with a mixed cord of brown, blue, and black, and a secure lashing at the top, this taonga links the past with the present, celebrating strength, utility, and cultural connection.
