Description

This taonga is named Roimata Karaka, acknowledging the warm karaka-toned rind that remains at the base of the carving. The roimata shape traditionally represents tears, but more deeply symbolises healing, emotional release, and the restoration of balance. Worn close to the heart, it can serve as a reminder of resilience and the quiet strength that grows through reflection.

The Pounamu in this piece is a vibrant and highly translucent green, glowing when held to the light with a clarity similar to Kahurangi Pounamu. At the base of the carving, a natural karaka-coloured rind remains in the stone, creating a striking contrast against the bright green body of the taonga.

The roimata is 55mm long and carved with flat faces on both the front and back, allowing the natural character of the Pounamu to stand out clearly. The edges are smoothly rounded, giving the piece a soft and balanced form.

The taonga is finished with a traditional black roimata lashing, providing a clean contrast against the luminous green stone.

Each piece of Pounamu carries its own natural patterns and story, making this Roimata a unique taonga.
