Description

This 65 millimetre Hei Matau is carved from translucent light green Pounamu, similar in tone to Kahurangi, with natural inclusions running through it that add texture and individuality. When held to the light, the stone reveals its inner life, showing depth and movement within the green. The inclusions give it character without taking away from its clarity.

The shape is long and narrow, giving the piece a strong, clean profile. The base finishes in a defined spike, adding presence and edge to the design, while the top curves into a subtle Hei Matau hook. It is a refined interpretation of a traditional form, keeping the integrity of the symbol while allowing the natural beauty of the stone to stand out.

The Hei Matau is traditionally associated with strength, determination, and prosperity. It symbolises a strong connection to Tangaroa and the ocean, offering protection and safe passage over water. It also represents abundance and the ability to provide for whānau. Worn close to the heart, it serves as a reminder of resilience, purpose, and steady forward movement.

This piece is unique and carved by hand, allowing the natural qualities of the Pounamu to guide its final shape.
