Description
Te Ao Mārama i Roto translates as “The World of Light Within.” It is a name inspired by the way this exceptional piece of kawakawa pounamu transforms when light passes through it. At first glance it appears to be a rich green toki, but when held to natural light an extraordinary world is revealed within. Swirling patterns, shifting tones, darker inclusions and luminous green layers create a sense of depth that seems to change from every angle.
Despite being a thick, substantial carving, the pounamu is remarkably translucent. The light reveals details hidden beneath the surface, reminding us that true depth and character are often discovered only when we take the time to look more closely.
A distinctive natural white rind has been left around the base of the toki, providing a beautiful contrast with the rich green pounamu while preserving a connection to the stone’s natural origins. It celebrates both the raw beauty of the material and the transformation that comes through carving.
The hei toki is a traditional symbol of strength, resilience, courage, and determination. It represents the ability to overcome challenges, develop knowledge and skill, and shape your own future with purpose. Combined with the remarkable translucency of this stone, Te Ao Mārama i Roto serves as a reminder that the greatest strength and understanding often come from what lies within.
