Manawanui Roimata

$240.00

This 50mm Roimata is carved from serpentine sourced from the Tasman area, a stone full of contrast and depth. The dark, deep greens are broken by pale green mottling and small traces of oxidised orange rind, giving the piece strong character and presence. Shaped with a firm, almost toki-like edge at the base, this Roimata carries a sense of strength and steadiness. Finished with a black Roimata lashing, it is a grounded and resilient taonga.

Description

Manawanui means perseverance and quiet strength, and that idea sits at the heart of this Roimata. Traditionally, the Roimata is associated with emotion, healing, and release, but it also speaks to endurance and the ability to carry feeling without breaking. This piece leans into that steadier side of the form, focusing on strength held within.

The serpentine used for this taonga comes from the Tasman area and has remarkable natural character. Under normal light it shows deep forest greens, layered with pale green mottling that moves across the surface. In places, small remnants of the oxidised outer rind remain, adding warm orange-brown highlights that speak to the stone’s journey from the outside in.

At 50mm long, the Roimata has a clean, confident form, with a slightly more defined, almost toki-like edge at the base. This gives the piece a subtle firmness and balance, reinforcing its kaupapa of resilience. A black Roimata lashing completes the taonga, keeping the focus on the stone itself and its natural strength.
