Description
The Pekapeka is a form inspired by the native bat of Aotearoa, a nocturnal guardian that embodies adaptability, communication, and guidance. Known for its ability to navigate the darkness, the Pekapeka is a powerful symbol of awareness and protection, reminding us that wisdom often comes from listening, sensing, and trusting beyond what can be seen.
This taonga, named Pekapeka Kaitiaki, emphasises the protective nature of the design. Its bold pāua shell eyes glow with life, symbolising insight and watchfulness. Carved from Raukaraka Pounamu, the stone blends pale greens with a warm orangey-gold tinge from the rind, creating a unique and vibrant surface. At 80mm across, it has a strong presence, balanced by the harakeke-coloured cord that connects it to the natural world.
This Pekapeka is a guardian to carry close — a reminder of adaptability, protection, and the guidance that helps us move confidently through life’s journeys.
