Description

This piece is a 75mm Niho carved from creamy, pale-toned Pākohe—a taonga stone rich in history and meaning. Its soft colouring almost glows in the light, bringing a quiet strength to the shape. A three-hole ring bolt lashing at the top completes the form, allowing the piece to sit well and wear comfortably.

The Niho, or tooth form, represents strength, determination, and a fierce sense of identity. Traditionally linked to the mana and courage of the warrior, it also symbolises protection and guardianship. In this case, it carries an added layer of meaning: connection. The shape, the stone, and the binding all speak of the ties that bind us—to each other, to our ancestors, and to the whenua itself.

Pākohe is a stone once traded extensively throughout Aotearoa for tools, blades, and taonga. Though different from Pounamu, it holds a similar reverence in te ao Māori, and I always feel honoured to work with it. This particular Pākohe has a gentle presence—quiet but strong, soft but unwavering.

Carving this Niho was a reflection on the people and kaupapa that connect us across time and space. Every cut reminded me that strength doesn’t have to shout. Sometimes, it simply holds firm.
