Description
This Niho, Ngākau Kōhatu, is carved from fossilised wood discovered in Southland. The wood began its journey millions of years ago, slowly transformed by the earth into stone. That transformation — from life to endurance — gives the piece its name: Ngākau Kōhatu, meaning “Heart of Stone.”
Measuring 45mm long, it features a natural face where the wood grain is still visible, a link to its living origins. The opposite side has been carved into a graceful curve and polished to a high mirror finish, reflecting the light — and the person who holds it. The contrast between these two faces captures the balance between the past and the present, between what was and what now endures.
At the top, a three-hole ringbolt lashing secures the taonga, finished with a deep brown 3-plait cord that complements the dark and caramel tones within the stone. The Niho shape symbolises strength, resilience, and determination — qualities that align perfectly with the story of this ancient material.
Every detail of Ngākau Kōhatu carries meaning. It is a reminder that transformation takes time, and that true strength often lies hidden in the layers of our own history.
