Description
Te Whakamana is a full-sized mere, 36cm long and 12cm wide, carved from rich green Kawakawa Pounamu sourced from the Hokitika area. The handle is finished with muka cord made from harakeke, bringing authenticity and a strong connection to tikanga Māori. Mere have long symbolised strength, prestige, and the mana of a leader.
This taonga was carved with deep respect for that tradition. The name Te Whakamana means “To Uplift, To Honour”—a fitting name for a piece that could be gifted to acknowledge service, leadership, or a life’s milestone.
This is my first full-sized mere, and it marks a significant point in my own journey as a carver. Learn more about the kaupapa behind this taonga here:
