Description
Mangopare Kaha means “Strength of the Hammerhead Shark.” I chose this name because the defining feature of this Hei Mātau is the mangopare carved at the end of the hook. In Māori symbolism, the hammerhead shark represents strength, resilience, courage, and leadership. It is a symbol of standing firm, moving forward with intent, and holding your ground when challenged.
This Hei Mātau is carved from Kawakawa Pounamu, known for its rich, deep green tones. The stone has a solid, grounded presence that suits the meaning of the mangopare well. At 60 millimetres long, it has a strong visual impact without being oversized. The black lashing and cord keep the focus on the stone and the carved detail, giving it a clean and balanced finish.
The Hei Mātau itself traditionally symbolises safe passage over water, abundance, and connection to the sea. Combined with the mangopare form, this piece speaks not just of journey, but of strength within that journey. It is a taonga for someone who values resilience, leadership, and the courage to face what lies ahead.
