Description
Carved from soft-toned Inanga Pounamu and measuring 100mm long, this Manaia was conceived first and foremost as a sculptural form—something to be held, studied, or displayed. Its design is bold and dynamic: a high-sweeping tail arcs gracefully behind, while a double-sided hand wraps around the torso in protection or embrace. The form invites exploration from every angle.
The Manaia is a powerful guardian figure in Te Ao Māori, often seen as a being that moves between worlds—physical and spiritual, seen and unseen. This piece honours that nature with form and movement. Its surface shifts gently with light, and its contours invite both thought and touch.
This taonga has been crafted with a removable binding, allowing the neck cord to be taken off and swapped out, so it can be worn close to the body or displayed in the home as a sculptural presence. It’s a piece that adapts—shifting between adornment and statement, between personal taonga and shared kōrero.
Te Āhuru means “The Shelter”—a name that reflects the comforting, protective nature of the Manaia and its dual role as a personal guardian and a sculptural anchor.
