Kiripaka Roimata Taonga – Earth and Memory
$180.00
This 90mm Roimata is carved from Kiripaka (Silcrete), a stone with deep connections to early Māori use in Aotearoa for tools and cutting implements. The long flowing shape of the Roimata symbolises healing, reflection, and emotional strength. One side carries burnt grey tones while the other shows rich dark browns and rusty colours, giving the taonga a strong earthy character. It is finished with an earthy green spiral cord that complements the natural tones of the stone.

Description
This Roimata taonga is carved from Kiripaka, also known as Silcrete, a material traditionally used by Māori throughout Aotearoa before European arrival. Kiripaka was valued for its hardness and ability to be shaped into tools and cutting edges, giving the stone a strong connection to the practical knowledge and resourcefulness of earlier generations.
The taonga is 90mm long with a rounded flowing form that sits comfortably against the chest. The Roimata shape is traditionally associated with healing, release, reflection, and strength through difficult experiences. Its long curved lines give the piece a calm and grounded feel in the hand.
The stone itself carries deep earthy character. One side has soft burnt grey colouring, while the other reveals dark browns with rusty tones running through it. These natural colours give the piece an ancient and weathered appearance that suits the history of the material. It is finished with a spiral cord in an earthy harakeke green tone that ties the whole piece back to the whenua and natural world.
