Description

Carved by David Curtis, this hei matau is shaped from beautiful kawakawa pounamu, displaying a rich, deep green throughout most of the pendant. A natural band of lighter green from the outer edge of the original boulder has been thoughtfully incorporated into the lower curve, creating a subtle contrast that enhances the flowing form.

The pendant has a long, elegant profile, giving it a refined appearance while still retaining the unmistakable shape of the traditional hei matau. Rather than a woven lashing, it features an exposed drop-hole suspension that becomes part of the overall design, allowing the natural beauty of the stone to remain the focus.

The hei matau is a symbol of abundance, prosperity, strength, and safe passage. Traditionally associated with fishing and the ocean, it also represents a deep connection to the natural world and the ability to navigate life’s challenges with confidence and purpose.

Polished to a high finish, this kawakawa hei matau is a timeless taonga that honours both the stone and the enduring meaning of this iconic form.
