Description

This 7cm Kapeu is carved from stunning Kahurangi Pounamu, known for its bright, clear green colouring and exceptional translucency. The natural glow of the stone shifts beautifully in the light, making this a taonga that feels alive with energy.

The Kapeu is a traditional Māori form originally worn as an ear ornament by both men and women. It symbolises prestige, refinement, and the mana of those who wore it. Its slender, curved shape reflects elegance and strength. Today, it is more commonly worn as a pendant, close to the chest, where it continues to carry deep cultural meaning.

This particular piece is suspended from a hand-braided tan 4-strand cord, chosen to complement the warmth of the stone. The lashing and cord are strong and simple, allowing the stone’s form and colour to stand on its own.

Historically, the Kapeu has also been associated with care and nurturing. Some accounts tell of mothers using its smooth curve to soothe their teething babies—a small but intimate role that further ties this form to aroha and whānau.

This is a taonga of grace and strength, grounded in tradition and made to be worn and treasured.
