Description

The toki is a form traditionally associated with strength, focus, and the shaping of both materials and people. As a taonga, it represents purposeful action, discipline, and the ability to refine skill over time. The narrow chisel-like form of this toki reinforces that idea of precision and intent, emphasising control and clarity rather than force.

This whakairo is carved from Inanga Pounamu, with soft pale green tones sitting alongside deeper green areas through the body of the stone. At the base, the orangey-coloured rind from the outer skin of the cobble has been left intact, creating a strong natural contrast and grounding the piece in its origin. The form is slim and elegant, with bevelled sides and smooth curves flowing across both the front and back. It measures 50mm long and is finished with a black cord, threaded through an embedded hole so the lashing sits flush and keeps the lines of the toki clean and uninterrupted.
