Description

I carved this traditional kapeu from beautiful inanga pounamu, six centimetres in length. The stone shifts from a pale green at the top into deeper, mid-pale tones at the base, with a soft glow that comes alive when the light touches it. The pendant is suspended on a white four-braid cord.

The kapeu is an ancient Māori form, originally worn as an ear pendant and later also around the neck. More than adornment, kapeu were taonga passed through generations, embodying mana, whakapapa, and the presence of those who wore them before. They could also be gifted to honour relationships, marking respect, connection, and alliance.

This piece holds the calm energy of inanga pounamu, named after the shimmering whitebait that move between river and sea. It symbolises flow, transition, and abundance. To wear a kapeu is to carry both beauty and whakapapa close, a reminder of belonging and continuity.
