Manu Huia – Pounamu Feather

$850.00

Manu Huia is a carved huia feather made from dark green serpentine from the Nelson–Tasman area. It has an opaque white rind naturally forming the pale feather tip, creating a striking contrast. The stone appears almost black until held to the light, where its translucency reveals the depth and patterning within. This taonga symbolises dignity, respect, and the carrying of legacy, echoing the mana of the original huia feather. It is 95mm long and finished with a black lashing.

Description

Manu Huia is a 95mm taonga carved in the shape of a huia feather, created from a beautiful translucent serpentine from the Nelson–Tasman region. I chose this stone because of its deep, almost black tone when resting in normal light, closely reflecting the colour of an actual huia feather. When raised to the light, the stone glows and reveals intricate patterning inside, giving a sense of life moving within the pounamu.

The opaque white rind has been shaped into the distinctive pale tip of the feather, bringing a natural authenticity to the design. Its form carries the quiet elegance and symbolism that huia feathers are known for: respect, honour, leadership, and a connection to whakapapa. These feathers were treasured historically, worn only by those of high standing and used to acknowledge the mana of the individual.

The piece is finished with a simple black lashing so the flow of the feather remains the focus. Manu Huia is a taonga for someone who values meaning, remembrance, and the quiet strength carried by the huia’s legacy.
